ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: An inter-provincial conference held at the prime minister’s secretariat here on Tuesday turned into a venue for projection of the ‘good deeds’ of the PML-Q government.

Caretaker Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Dr Mohammad Amjad praised President Pervez Musharraf for a number of steps he had taken for promotion of harmony among the provinces in 2006 and 2007. Dr Amjad was president of the PML-Q’s Islamabad chapter before being appointed a minister.

Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro, who presided over the final session, delivered a brief speech. Before him, the minister, who was the host, spoke about the development works undertaken by the outgoing government over the past five years.

Mr Soomro stressed the need for national consensus on the need for building more dams and enhancing power production.

He said similar conferences should be held at the provincial level to promote inter-provincial harmony.

He said efforts were being made to hold a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to resolve constitutional issues.

Dr Amjad said the caretaker government was trying to convene a CCI meeting before the election.

He said the government was finalising recommendations on provincial autonomy and it would leave a set of proposals for the elected government.

The conference was attended by representatives of trade and industry from all over the country.
