PESHAWAR, Feb 1: The Frontier government has directed the City Development and Municipal Department (CD&MD) to devise feasibility plans for reducing traffic load on Jamrud Road, treatment of solid waste and beautification of Hayatabad Township.

Instructions to this effect were issued by Secretary Local Government and Rural Development Department (LG&RDD) Dr Hammad Uwais Agha during inspection of Hayatabad and Regi Lalma Townships here on Friday.

Director General CD&MD Jan Ali and General Manager Planning and Development Tariq Mahmood accompanied him.

NWFP Chief Secretary Sahibzada Riaz Noor had directed the LG&RDD to develop long term and short term strategies to reduce traffic congestion and improve the state of civic amenities in metropolitan, an official told Dawn.

Traffic congestion on Jamrud Road has become a permanent nuisance for the commuters, as they have to face hours long traffic jams in visiting Hayatabad, University Town areas from city. This highway also serves as international link road between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Secretary LG&RDD said the official, directed the CD&MD to prepare three different strategies to deal with the problem.

These included widening the existing Jamrud Road and construction of two new approach roads from Ring Road and Hayatabad to University Town.

“This will significantly reduce load and help organise traffic on main Jamrud Road,” the official explained.

For safe disposal of solid waste, the CD&MD was advised to make a plan for recycling of solid waste collected from Hayatabad and Regi Townships that will not only improve hygiene situation, but will also help improve local environment.

Similarly, the Secretary LG&RDD also directed installation of fountains at different location inside Hayatabad, which will enhance its beauty.

In Regi Lalma, the CD&MD was asked to prepare construct three check dams on nullahs passing through various phases of the underdeveloped Township.

This will control level of seasonal floods in the area as well as rain water can be used for multiple purposes, the official informed.

The CD&MD was directed to expedite work on establishment of a Zoo in provincial metropolis and a mini Zoo in Hayatabad Township. The CD&MD had acquired land measuring 150 kanals for extension of Zoo located in Bagh-i-Naran, the official added.
