Far from the madding crowd

IN a city famous for bringing together different communities, languages and cultures, Zamzama Park provides a glimpse into the heterogeneity that makes Karachi unique. United in their need for healthy recreation, drawn by the cool breezes and slight chill of the winter air, people from all sections of society – from burqa-clad women to foreigners — visit the park for an evening stroll.

The importance of such a recreational area cannot be overemphasised in this concrete jungle where access to open spaces is increasingly limited and few have the luxury of private lawns. With more people living in high-rise towers and apartment buildings, the authorities must protect the existing green spaces and develop new ones — outdoor activity in safe, pollution-free environs is essential for the health of citizens.
