LAHORE, Dec 20: Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy Deputy Information Secretary Munir Ahmad Khan has said state resources are being misused for influencing the results of general elections in favour of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q).

At a news conference where he was flanked by Pakistan Peoples Party, Lahore, President, Haji Azizur Rehman Chan at the Lahore Press Club here on Thursday, he alleged cheques of Rs1,500 were being sent to voters from the chief minister’s fund in selected constituencies.

Police and patwaris were used by governor’s personal secretary Hassan Waseem Afzal for gathering people for a public meeting addressed by former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Ealhi in Lahore, recently.

He said caretaker prime minister and chief ministers were releasing funds for the execution of development schemes announced by the PML-Q candidates. Police and local government employees were being used for displaying election publicity banners and hoardings of the PML-Q candidates and removal of those of their opponents, he added.

BADR: Pakistan People’s Party Secretary-General Jehangir Badr has called upon President Pervez Musharraf to get rid of political ‘mercenaries’ serving him as caretakers who are creating conditions similar to the French Revolution in the country.

Addressing a news conference at the Lahore Press Club on Thursday, he said the president was promising fair and free elections by the caretakers who were victimising political opponents of the government-sponsored PML-Q and using state resources for influencing the results of general elections in favour of its candidates.

He said curbs had been imposed on the media and economic problems were being created in the form of flour shortage and increase in gas and power prices to counter the wave of political awareness among the people.

He said: “Fair elections will not be possible if the caretakers continue to act the way they are doing at present.”
