KARACHI, Dec 9: Four-year-old chestnut filly Eswarah lowered the colours of co-favourite Big Show when she romped home by half length to land The Quaid-i-Azam Trial Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The win enabled Eswarah to make it two on trot and add another feather in her cap following triumph in the Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara Double Birthday Cup on Nov 25.

The filly, from the stables of KRC Racing Committee chairman Syed Sadruddin Shah and saddled by trainer Ehtisham, was smartly ridden home by Ghulam Shabbir II in the 10 furlongs race.

The Rajars who dominated the days proceedings with a treble including a cup, should curse them for bringing rider Shahid Rehman in place of Nasir at the last minute.

Big Show looked to be cruising as the two led the field around the home turn but went wide and unable to make up for the difference.

Filly Abhi Abhi was ranked third, further four-and-a-half lengths back while mare Makina completed the frame.

Rehman, who earlier shared the day’s riding honours with Shabbir by piloting home a brace of winners apiece steered colt Dream Rose to a short-head victory over favourite Fair Diamond to lift The Colts and Fillies Trial Cup. Both the horses belonged to the same connection.

Filly Fantastic Baby settled for third, six-and-a-half lengths behind with another filly Phapha Kutni completing the board.

In an earlier race, Rehman presented Haji Khuda Bux Rajar with a winner when he galloped favourite colt Cash Flow to three-and-a-half length’s victory over Awan. Outsider two-year-old filly

The Victorious, ridden by Arshad, claimed The Sapphires Stakes edging colt Discreet Cat by half length. Ten-year-old chestnut Thanks Naeem pulled off the first upset of the day edging public fancy filly Sweetie Pie by a short-head to land the opener.

With a hat-trick under her belt, three-year-old chestnut filly Crown Prince stretched her winning run when she beat The Ghazan Prince by seven lengths.

Favourite Eager Saint also obliged punters outpacing Reyan The Great by half length to make it two-in-a-row.

Outsiders chestnut Desert Hawk and mare Sweet Grandy picked up the spoils in the seventh and ninth races while co-favourite Al Zarrar heavily backed by connection posted a facile five-length’s victory to claim the concluding race.

Trainer Mushtaq Ali Khan sent home three winners while Ehtisham ended with a brace.
