KARACHI: PPP inducts heavyweights

Published November 29, 2007

KARACHI, Nov 28: The Pakistan People’s Party has inducted some of its stalwarts in Karachi to strengthen its power play team in the upcoming general elections. According to the party sources, Afaq Khan Shahid has filed nominations seeking to return to the National Assembly on two seats. One is for NA-141 seat which was bagged by a candidate of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal in the previous elections. Originally the party had nominated Dr Shakir Alam to contest from this constituency. For NA-242, which belongs to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the PPP had originally given ticket to Jameelur Rehman advocate. The party will now decide who will remain in the field in both the constituencies. Mr Afaq Khan will have to do a Herculean job to muster enough votes to win the constituency as the differences within the party, which had played significant role in the results of previous elections, could cost much more to the PPP in the metropolis.

Saathi Ishaq is another candidate who has submitted his nomination paper to return to the National Assembly on seat NA-247. For this constituency, the PPP had originally given ticket to Sohail Abrar, who later filed his nomination for NA-254 though party’s original nominee Abdul Sattar Channa has already filed his papers to contest on that seat.

PPP leader K. Qureshi has filed his nomination papers from NA-257, a constituency in Malir where the original nominee Riaz Hussain Lund Baloch has also filed papers. PPP has also fielded former minister Abdullah Baloch in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s era from NA-240.

Besides, Abdul Qadir Patel who had defeated late Mir Murtaza Bhutto from PS-86 in 1993 has now been fielded from NA-239.

Sher Muhammed Baloch from NA-258, Abdul Habib Memon from NA-249, Nabeel Gabol from NA-248, and Rafiq Engineer from PS-109 are being considered strong candidates of the PPP.
