Jirga to boycott LB polls

Published March 23, 2002

KALAYA, March 22: A local jirga, comprising almost all the tribes of Orakzai Agency, held here on Thursday decided to boycott the proposed local government polls in the tribal belt, and take action against those locals who had announced support to the elections.

The jirga including prominent Maliks and chieftains, termed the proposal of holding the elections in the tribal agencies a ploy to pit the tribes against each other.

Speaking on the occasion, the Maliks observed that the political system in vogue in the tribal areas had ensured peace and security in the agencies.

It was further decided that the jirga would take action against any tribesman who violated the decisions.

It imposed a fine of Rs300,000 on one Subedar Ali Majan, who had extended full support to the government decision of holding local bodies elections in the tribal territory.
