LAHORE, Sept
30: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers staged a demonstration outside
the Lahore Press Club on Sunday to condemn police action against journalists and
lawyers in Islamabad.
The workers displayed banners and placards and raised slogans against police.
Speaking on the occasion, Shahbaz Sharif Secretariat Political Secretary Naushad
Hamid said the use of force against lawyers and journalists had exposed the
government’s claims about democracy and freedom of expression. He said people
would always remember journalists and lawyers’ struggle for the restoration of
democracy. He condemned the siege of Shahbaz Sharif Secretariat by police and
raids at PML-N activists’ houses.
JUP: Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Pakistan (JUP) Secretary General Qari Zawwar
Bahadar has said that the dictatorial regime was resorting to violence to
prolong its unconstitutional rule.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, he said the struggle against dictatorship
had entered its decisive phase and the rulers were resorting to use of force to
suppress their opponents.
The resignations by legislators belonging to component parties of All Pakistan
Democratic Movement would prove to be the last nail in the coffin of
dictatorship, Mr Bahadar said and added that the masses would also have to play
their role in the struggle to oust usurpers from power.
TEACHERS: The Muttahida Mahaz Asatiza has demanded a judicial inquiry
into the police excesses against journalists and lawyers on Constitution Avenue
in Islamabad on Saturday.
Voicing the demand in a statement issued here on Sunday, Mahaz chairman Hafiz
Abdul Nasir and other office-bearers said that identification of officials
responsible for brutalities was necessary so that they could be proceeded
against for their excesses. They said that teachers supported the struggle of
lawyers and journalists for democracy and would cooperate with them in every
