ISLAMABAD, Sept 24: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leader Hafiz Hussain Ahmed after his release from preventive detention on Monday headed straight to a police station to register a complaint of alleged manhandling and torture by the police.

Sources said the MMA leader was quietly released from detention some time last night but the announcement by the authorities was made on Monday.

Mr Ahmad, accompanied by scores of people including politicians and mediapersons, visited the Secretariat police station to lodge the complaint.

When contacted, Mr Ahmad told Dawn that he had lodged the complaint against Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, Secretary Syed Kamal Shah, Inspector-General of Islamabad police (post vacant), SSP Dr Naeem Khan, SHO Secretariat Inspector Khan Khurshid Khan and other police officials.

He alleged that the police officials entered his Parliament Lodges apartment by force on Saturday night, broke valuables in a room and manhandled him, resulting bruises and wounds to his arms and legs.

He also alleged that the police also thrashed one of his relatives, Obaidur Rehman, and tied his hands and legs. Later, the police locked him in a room and left the building, he claimed.

“I personally handed over the complaint to the Muharar of the police station,” he added.

When contacted, the SHO of Secretariat confirmed that Mr Ahmad had lodged a complaint against the police officers. He, however, said no case had been registered as all the action had been taken on the directives of the Islamabad capital territory administration.

“I did not receive the complaint because I have been nominated as an accused in the complaint,” the SHO said, adding inspector Irshad was investigating the matter.

But when contacted, duty officer Khadim Hussain and the inspector said no such complaint had been registered with the police.
