KARACHI, March 18: Police arrested two suspects in the city on Monday for their alleged involvement in sectarian killings.

The suspects confessed to have killed five Shias, including a doctor and a health inspector, police said.

On a tip-off, police raided spotted places in Orangi Town and New Karachi Industrial Area, where they arrested Irfan Islam and Abdul Wudood and recovered two mouser guns from their possession.

The SSP Investigation-II, Manzoor Mughal, said the suspects told police that they shot dead Dr Karamat Husain at his clinic in Orangi Extension on October 29, 2000. The suspects also kidnapped and killed health inspector Shamim Ahmed, and dumped the body in Orangi Town. They also killed three other Shias.

During interrogation, they disclosed the names of their accomplices. Police were conducting raids to arrest them. The names of the accomplices were being kept secret, police added.

The city police, chief Asad Jehangir, during a press conference on March 15 had claimed that police had arrested six suspects allegedly involved in the killing of 27 people, including six doctors. He said the arrested suspects were affiliated with the banned organizations, the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan and the Lashkar-i-Jhangavi.

Those arrested were Arif alias Jihadi, Mohammed Ejaz, Mehmood Babar, Zeeshan Siraj, Mohammed Imran and Roshan Zia. The city police chief also said police had taken 125 people into preventive custody on the eve of Muharram.
