RAHIM YAR KHAN, Sept 11: The police have arrested an assistant excise and taxation officer (AETO) and his accomplice who shot at a patrolling party and seized fake stamps of public representatives, fake number plates along with number tempering machine, an AK-47 rifle and few bottles of liquor from them.
A police party headed by City ASP Junaid Ahmed was patrolling in Abbasia Town when they signalled a mini jeep to stop on which jeep’s passengers shot at the police. The police also retaliated on which jeep’s passengers stopped resisting. The police held them all except one, Ghulam Shabbir, who managed to flee.
The arrested were later identified as AETO Jam Hayat and Shahzad Ahmed Warraich. The police also seized fake stamps of nazims and secretaries of various union councils and government contractors, fake number plates along with a number tempering machine, an AK-47 rifle and eight bottles of liquor and then registered cases against them.
According to sources, a state minister, district nazim, district naib nazim and a former district nazim were allegedly pressing the police to release the culprits.
DIALOGUE: There was no ‘deal’ being negotiated between President Parvez Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto, however the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was only conducting a ‘dialogue’ with the general, MNA Belum Hussnain told reporters here on Tuesday.
Belum, who is also Punjab PPP Women’s Wing president, said Benazir Bhutto would announce her return to Pakistan on Sept 14 and we would accord her a historic welcome like that of 1988.
She said her fellows had started a campaign in which women workers would be mobilised for the forthcoming general elections.
She said Ghulam Mustafa Khar was still a prominent leader of the PPP but he made his decisions independently. She said Khar disagreed with Bhutto in 1975 but he sided with Bhutto again in 1977.
She claimed that Nawaz Sharif feared his deportation and that was why he flew to Islamabad alone and left Shahbaz Sharif in London. To a question, she said deporting Sharif was not a contempt of court because he himself accepted exile instead of jail.
Azma Bukhari, who is general secretary of the wing, said western countries injected huge funds into Pakistan after the 9/11.
She said General Musharraf contacted Benazir Bhutto for his own survival and it was not Benazir who wanted shaking hands with General Musharraf first.
