KARACHI, Sept 11: A botanical garden spread over 35 acres will be inaugurated at Karachi University’s campus on Wednesday by Governor of Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, who is also the chancellor of public sector universities in the province.

This was stated by the director of the garden, Professor Dr M. Qaiser.

He pointed out that the project had been completed in a period of over two years at a cost of Rs29 million. He said that this is the first botanical garden in any of the educational institutions in the country.

Dr Qaiser said that more than 2,000 species of both wild and cultivated plants were housed in the garden.

He said that a good number of plants were rare and available only in Pakistan while the garden also had rare species from various parts of the world.

Dr Qaiser said that the botanical garden would mainly focus on plant conservation.

“A tissue culture laboratory has also been set up at the botanical garden to grow plants by applying this technique,” he added.—APP
