ISLAMABAD, Sept 6: A day after their women grabbed the finals, the Indian men took charge on the fourth day claiming nine gold medals at the inaugural South Asian Swimming and Water Polo Championship on Thursday.
After the first day’s proceedings of the men’s event, India remain on top with 9 golds, 6 silvers and 1 bronze; Sri Lanka take second place with 1 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze whereas hosts Pakistan lie third with 1 silver and 5 bronze medals.
India’s Karan Singh won the gold medal in the 200m freestyle by crossing the distance in 2min 12.41sec, his compatriot Saurabh Ramdas got the silver medal and Pakistan’s Mazhar Naqvi won the bronze.
In 200m butterfly freestyle open category India’s Aaron D’souza won the gold clocking 2min 7.09sec, his compatriot Aditya Sangverkar taking silver and Pakistan’s Nasir Ali getting the bronze.
The Indian swimmers also excelled in the 50m butterfly age group and 1500m freestyle open category with Gopinath Kayal and Aaron D’souza bringing golds for them.
