KARACHI, Sept 1: Sindh Minister for Local Government Mohammad Hussain on Friday said that all the towns of Karachi are being provided modern machinery for lifting garbage, cleaning drains and for the day-to-day cleanliness requirements.

He was speaking at a ceremony held for handing over machinery to the sanitation department of Korangi Town.

The minister said that special funds are provided to the towns from the Sindh Devolved Social Services Programme for the purchase of garbage lifting equipment and other machinery. This equipment will have a visible impact on the overall cleanliness situation of various towns, he added.

He said that UCs should also focus their attention on routine cleanliness through the proper utilisation of sanitary staff and sweepers and to take steps for physical verification of the staff employed with them.

The minister said that all towns should follow the example of Korangi Town and establish transfer centres for garbage lifted from the entire town before shifting it to landfills.

Earlier, he inaugurated a complaint call centre in Korangi Town and said that this facility would benefit the town in resolving problems and catering to any emergency.

Encroachments removed

Encroachments were removed from S.M. Taufiq Road, Liaquatabad Super Market, during a major operation carried out on Saturday.

During the operation the goods of encroachers were confiscated.

The operation has smoothened the traffic flow in the area while the Liaquatabad TMO directed the traffic section officer to ensure that vehicles are only allowed to park in a single row along the footpath so that the traffic flow is not hindered.

Town Nazim Osama Qadri has appealed to the people to observe traffic laws and cooperate with the traffic police so as to improve the traffic situation in the area.—APP
