NEW DELHI, March 10: All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Sunday rejected the proposal of Kanchi Shankaracharya for a symbolic bhoomi puja near the disputed site in Ayodhya by the Ramjanambhoomi Trust on March 15 and construction of a temple there.

The Board, after its day-long meeting, said in a statement that “it resolves to convey to Kanchi Shankaracharya its inability to accept his proposal of March 8 as being incomplete and incoherent”.

It also appealed to the Centre to ensure maintenance of status quo in the land acquired by it and effective steps to ensure that no symbolic kar seva or puja take place in the area.

Y H Muchala, an executive committee member of the board, told a jampacked press conference that all parties concerned must abide by the verdict of the Supreme Court on the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.

Maintaining that the proposals put forward by the Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswati did not offer any solution to the problem in its entirety to Muslims, he said the board “is unable to accept the proposals received by it on March 8.”

He said certain documents, including a copy of the building plan of the temple, the site plan and the undertaking given by the Ram Janambhoomi Trust to Prime Minister Vajpayee has not been made available to the board despite repeated requests.

The board, Muchala said, observed “it is not clear whether the Trust is entitled to undertake such construction as also its links with VHP and other Sangh Parivar bodies.”—APP
