KARACHI, July 17: The Anti-Corruption Committee-II at a meeting on Tuesday reviewed 27 cases of alleged corruption against various officials of the provincial and city governments and decided further proceedings.

The meeting reviewed cases pertaining to the city government’s departments of revenue, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), health and cooperative while those of the Sindh government were related to the departments of katchi abadis, excise and taxation, police, traffic police and registrar.

The cases were submitted to the committee for consideration and necessary approval required for prosecution.

Thirteen cases of corruption against the police were reported to the committee. In most of the cases, bribes were demanded from innocent people who were threatened to be implicated in false cases.

An ASI of Nasirabad check post, Bin Qasim Police Station, Hassan Bux, along with Tota Khan, Mithal and Sharafat illegally detained a shopkeeper, Yasin Abbasi, and demanded Rs25,000 for his release and threatened to involve him in a false case if he failed to pay the amount. The meeting approved the prosecution of the case.

Other cases against police officials which were decided to be prosecuted included the case against Head Constable Noor Mohammad, working in the office of DIG Reserve Force, Hasan Square.

He was caught red-handed by the anti-corruption police while receiving Rs2,700 as a bribe from Shah Dost. Farrukh Shah of Gulshan-i-Iqbal Police Station was also allowed to be prosecuted as it was proved during an investigation that he had demanded Rs10,000 from Mohammad Rafiq and in case of non-payment threatened to implicate Rafiq in a fake cases.

A similar case of intimidation of a woman by a KWSB sub-inspector was also placed before the meeting. SI Mohammad Tariq Khan had demanded Rs25,000 from Tabassum Wahdat, threatening her that if she failed to comply, a case of meter tampering would be registered against her.

A case against the administrator of Lucknow Society, Mohammad Saeed Rajput, was also approved by the committee to be prosecuted. He had been arrested red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs10,000 for issuing an NOC to Azra Bibi.

The meeting was attended, among others, by chief controller of Buildings, EDO Health, District Officer Revenue Faisal Ahmed Uqaili, District Officer Land Management-II Tariq Nasir, District Officer Sindh Kathchi Abadis Dr Asghar Abbas and the deputy director, Anti-Corruption, Karachi, Salahuddin Abbasi.—APP
