RAWALPINDI, July 12: Special Judge of Anti-Terrorism Court No 2, Sakhi Mohammad Kahot here on Thursday remanded Maulana Abdul Aziz in police custody for seven days in the case of killing a Rangers personnel on July 3.

The maulana was produced in the court by the police at 5pm after he was brought back from Rojhan village where he led the funeral prayer of his brother Abdul Rasheed Ghazi.

The police obtained the physical remand, in the absence of his lawyer, in the case registered with the Aabpara police charging him with murder, attempted murder, dacoity, using fire arms and explosives, obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, abetment, unlawful assembly and terrorism.

In another case registered with the Margalla police, he has been charged with trespassing a house with the intent to cause hurt, assaulting and using criminal force against a woman to outrage her modesty, kidnapping a person and keeping him in illegal custody, abetment, unlawful assembly and terrorism.

He was also wanted in a case registered with the Bhara Kahu police on April 14 on the charges of causing public nuisance, abetment and terrorism.

Security forces barred mediapersons and some lawyers from entering the court on the occasion. The lawyers were, however, allowed to enter the court after the president of the bar association intervened.

Some of the lawyers told the media that the maulana had demanded that the court should allow him to speak to his lawyer Hashmat Habib, who reached the court after half an hour.

Talking to the mediapersons, Mr Habib said the authorities had given him the impression that his client would not be produced in the court as it was too late in the day.
