KARACHI, June 21: At least two men were killed and five others injured in two rain-related incidents here on Thursday. A man died and five other people offering prayer in a mosque were injured when a temporary structure fitted with loudspeakers, in place of a proper minaret, fell on them as the rain and thunderstorm began lashing the city on Thursday evening.

Police said the dead was identified as Shoaib, who died on the spot while the five others were injured after being hit by the structure. They were taken to nearby hospitals and clinics for treatment. Police removed Shoaib’s body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.

The town police officer of Site, ASP Sohail Zafar Chattah, said he would register a case of criminal negligence against the mosque administration.

In the other incident, 22-year-old Subhan was electrocuted to death when he stepped onto fallen overhead wires in New Karachi.

Police said Subhan was headed home in Khamesu Goth in New Karachi and as he stepped onto the live wires near his home, he was electrocuted and killed instantly.

Area people took his body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, police said.

POWER BREAKDOWNS: On the longest day of the year when the mercury shot up to 39.5 degrees Celsius with 57 per cent humidity, there was no respite for the Karachiites from power outages before and after the monsoon’s first downpour on Thursday.

Many areas were without electricity for several hours as the KESC was unable to attend to all the cable faults and trippings in the distribution system.

The KESC had to resort to about 150 megawatts load-shedding stretched over one and a half hour to meet the generation gap. After Wednesday night’s power riot in Akhtar Colony and Korangi Road, the problem with the NR feeder still persisted in the area.
