KARACHI, June 17: The Sunni Tehrik and the Sunni Rabita Council representatives were given a briefing about the Nishtar Park bombing investigation by the officials of an intelligence agency in an apparent attempt to convince them about the official findings.

Sources said the representatives of Sunni Tehrik and Sunni Rabita Council were also shown the footage of the confessional statement made by the accused besides the DNA report results and other material which could help the viewers buy their findings.

Last week, the Sindh home department had claimed breakthrough in the investigation of Nishtar Park blast that claimed lives of top leadership of Sunni Tehrik on Eid Milad-un-Nabi on April 11, 2006.

According to the investigation officials, the suicide bomber was Muhammad Siddiq. Hailing from Seri Karnashi, a village in district Mansehra, he had links with Laskhar-i-Jhangvi.

Responding to Dawn’s query if they were satisfied with the briefing, Sunni Rabita Council chief Mufti Muneebur Rehman said it would be premature to say anything. “It was not an act of an individual there must be a whole network working behind him,” he remarked and refrained from making any further comment.

However, a leader of the Sunni Tehrik requesting anonymity said that they were not ‘impressed’ by the briefing of the intelligence agency which claims that the case stands solved.

To deliberate over the government’s claim and decide about the response to the official findings, a meeting of the Sunni Tehrik and the Sunni Rabita Council was likely to take place soon, sources said.

According to the official statement issued last week, the network responsible for the blast was based in Darra Adamkhel. Led by Amanullah alias Mufti Ilyas, the network comprises Qari Abid Iqbal Mehsood, Muhammad Khalid Khan alias Abrar, Sultan alias Mehmood, Mufti Zakir and Rehmatullah. Out of six accused, Mehmood is already in jail, Mufti Zakir and Rehmat have been arrested while three others are at large.

The group is involved in spotting, preparing and brainwashing people for suicide bombing in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the official statement claims.
