KARACHI, Mar 4: The executive council of Karachi University Teachers’ Society has opposed the suggestions put up by a task force on universities.

The meeting held with, the KUTS president, Dr Fahimuddin, in the chair, the other day, alleged the government that it was planning to end the democratic institutions at the public sector universities.

The council denounced the suggestions of VCs’ meeting held in Islamabad recently and some related suggestions of Minister of Education.

It was observed in the KUTS meeting that the task force was dominated by vice chancellors of private universities who have ”vested interests in downgrading the public universities”.

The council also expressed its dismay over the proposed University ordinance, which, according to it, was aimed at dismantling all statutory bodies which had elected representation of teachers.

“It is a recognized experience of teachers at varsities that the elected representatives of teachers in statutory bodies, like Senate and Syndicate, have always been a crucial tool for representing teachers’ grievances”, added the KUTS press release, maintaining that 12 out 18 members of Syndicate are not elected, but nominated, and it was the nomination which caused difficulties.

The KUTS urged the members of teachers community at other universities and institutions to join hands against any move against teachers.

The body also expressed its dissatisfaction over certain administrative actions taken in the case of Department of Computer Science.
