DADU, May 8: The district council on Tuesday demanded that the Sindh government should deploy Rangers along waterways and canals to curb water theft and take measures to help people facing water shortage in the district.

District Naib Nazim Syed Mohammad Shah presided over the council session.

A member Khursheed Ahmed Khoonharo tabled a resolution stating that the irrigation officials were selling water to influential landlords in the southern part of the district hence shortage of water to the tail-end abadgars.

He said that scores of watercourses fed by Dadu canal and Johi branch had been tempered in collusion with irrigation officials.

Hundreds of farmers were unable to sow vegetables and other crops due to water shortage, he said.

The members adopted the resolution urging the Sindh government to deploy Rangers along the canals in Dadu and take action against water theft.

Allah Yar Rodhnani demanded that the BHP Billiton company carry out the development works under the supervision of DCO.

District Nazim Karim Ali Jatoi said that a meeting would be held with BHP officials in a couple of days to settle the issue.

The council passed the resolution demanding the president of the company to start development projects through district administration and conduct audit of NGOs.
