LONDON, May 8: One of the most positive outcomes of the current movement for supremacy of the Constitution and establishment of rule of law had been the coming together of people from all provinces in Pakistan, according to the spokesman of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the spokesman said that the overwhelming support of the people of Sindh, NWFP and Punjab for Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, who belongs to the minority Balochistan province, had exploded the myth that the people of Punjab were partners of authoritarian regimes or that they had no concern for grievances of smaller provinces.
He said that the current movement was purely against dictatorship and for establishing constitutional rule that was being supported by the people regardless of their caste or creed.
“The country’s only hope is through politics as only genuine political forces can bring the people of all provinces together for the betterment of Pakistan,” he said.
The spokesman said that those political parties that previously had always claimed to stand for democracy and never missed a Punjab bashing opportunity should now prove their credentials by not siding with the military dictator against the wishes of the people.
He said that in fact all those parties that would misjudge the present mood of the nation would do so only at their political peril as history was being created and the people never forgot easily when expressing their will through the collective wisdom of the electorate.
In conclusion the statement said that ‘Constitution’, ‘rule of law’ and ‘democracy’ had become the motto of the nation that would not rest before ensuring its enforcement in the country.
