MUZAFFARGARH, May 1: Only one violent demonstration of the workers of the company working on Taunsa Barrage brought good days for them.
On May Day, Descon not only offered labourers gifts and meal but also gave them promotions.
Some 3,000 workers had on April 8 blocked road, burnt offices and injured many officials to vent their anger because of delay in payment of salaries. Police registered a case against 26 labourers on the report of administrator Chaudhry Manzoor.
Labourers said they were protesting peacefully but Chaudhry Manzoor spoke very harshly with them and warned them that they would be sacked. On it, they beat him and other officials.
The company appointed Capt Hamayun (retired) in place of Chaudhry Manzoor who arranged a ceremony on Tuesday at which he gave prizes to labourers and announced promotions after three months.
He advised labourers to contact him if they have any problem. Company officials Sheikh Anees, sheikh Nusrat and Riaz Lashari were also present.
Meanwhile, irrigation SDO Riaz Almani said tender for two spurs at a cost of Rs240 million and Rs280 million had been approved and the work on the project would start next week.
He said the spurs would be completed before monsoon.
