KARACHI, April 19: A suspected dacoit was killed and his brother and their woman accomplice were injured in a shootout with a community-supervised police squad in North Nazimabad on Thursday.

Police said the gang of four struck at the house of Mohammed Jalil, a retired banker, in Block-A, North Nazimabad, at around 10am. The woman rang the doorbell and as soon as the door was opened, the gangsters forced their way into the house, holding the inmate, Mr Jalil, hostage at gunpoint, they added.

The police said that while the bandits were scooping up jewellery and precious wrist watches, a tenant of Mr Jalil living on the first floor sensed that something was wrong and informed police.

A police party rushed to the spot but the dacoits had left before they could make it, they said. However, they added, the police chased the fleeing dacoits, who started shooting. Police returned fire, killing one of the suspects, later identified as Amir, son of Essa, and injuring his brother, Abid.

The alleged woman accomplice, identified as Rahila alias Hina wife of Mohammed Ali, was injured when she jumped down the boundary wall. The fourth suspect was identified as Ghulam Mustafa.

The victim’s son, Ahsen Jalil, told Dawn that his elderly father was alone when the dacoits struck.

Police said the gang was involved in over two dozen house robberies.
