LAHORE, Feb 25: Coming from behind, fancied chestnut colt Son Of A Gun moved ahead and never allowed any one to beat him, to claim the Derby Trials race at the Racecourse on Monday. The race was competed over one-and-a-quarter miles.
A big crowd of connoisseurs of racing came to rapt attention before bursting into a spontaneous applause as Son Of A Gun fled past the winning post. He defeated Karachi’s prodigious bay colt Steal The Show by two-and-a-half lengths. Bay filly Gambling Princess was nosed out by Steal The Show and finished third. Yet another bay filly Cisco Magic completed the frame, two lengths further behind. In all, eight ran in this fourth race of the day.
Running strongly in the early part of the race, Son Of A Gun shot into the lead in the home stretch and registered a facile win.
Piloted by the jockey Aamar Parvez, this colt Son Of A Gun is from Shogun-out-of-Ginza Gift, is owned by Mohammad Yaqoob and trained by Khadim Hussain. The Derby Trials was a term race for four-year-old Pakistani colts and fillies.
The winner clocked a good time of two minutes 9 4/5 seconds over the distance in this most important race of the afternoon.
Earlier, three-year-old bay filly Democracy lifted the Bin Qasim Cup run over the sprinting distance of six furlongs.
In this term race for three-year-old home-bred colts and fillies, Democracy made a late burst of speed from the last position to win the race in a heroic fashion. She beat the bay colt Flight Alert by one-and-a-quarter lengths. The dark-bay filly Qaswa Princess finished third half-a-length further behind while Red Storm completed the board, seven lengths further back. In all, only seven colts and fillies faced the starter’s order in this second race of the afternoon. The ace jockey Salah-ud-Din II rode Democracy to this creditable victory.
