PESHAWAR, March 20: At least 47 people were killed and 21 injured as heavy rain triggered house collapses and mudslides in northern parts of the country on Monday night and Tuesday.
Three children and a woman were killed when a house collapsed in the Kutab Garh area of Mardan.
In the Jalala village, northeast of Mardan city, a house collapsed on Monday night, killing Saadullah. Another house collapsed in the Taza Gram area of the district killing a six-year-old son of Ajmeer Khan.
Two people were killed and three injured when a house collapsed in the Gortey Shah Village. The injured were taken to a hospital.
Seven people were killed and three wounded in Shakhakot and Dargai areas of Malakand Agency in house collapse incidents. A school building also collapsed in which two children were injured.
In Malakand Agency’s Koot area, the building of a primary school collapsed on Monday night, officials said. They said the building had already been declared endangered and students had been relocated to another building.
Four members of a family were buried alive and two others were wounded when a landslide hit a residential compound in Gishar Khowar near Mingora on Monday night. The injured were taken to a hospital in Saidu Sharif.
Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani, who was in Mingora, announced Rs100,000 compensation for heirs of each of the deceased.
In the Gali Garam area of Swat, the roof of a house caved in, killing five people.
In Nowshera district’s Nizampur area, the wife of Jamal and their minor daughter, Samia, were killed when their house collapsed on Tuesday morning, police said. Jamal was injured.
A wall collapsed in the Shalozan village of Kurram Agency on Monday evening which killed two children, residents said.
Four people were injured in Bajuar Agency when they were struck by lightening, officials said. They said the telecommunication system was disrupted.
Three children and a woman were killed in two separate roof collapse incidents in Bilitang and Charkarmela areas on Monday night.
The father of the children, Shafahat, 12, Naghma, 6, and Basra, 3, is a former councillor. His wife was seriously injured.
The roof of a house fell on a woman, Fatima, in the Chakarmela area of Jangle Khel, killing her.
Three people were killed when a house collapsed in the Tangi area of Charsadda on Tuesday, officials said.
Five members of a family were killed when an avalanche hit their house in the mountainous area at Khairabad near Koligram in Swat, APP reports, quoting police.
The victims were identified as Nadir, 3, Haider, 10, Robeea, 4, and Sajid. Two others were injured in the incident who were taken to a hospital.
GILGIT: Torrential rain and snowfall on Tuesday paralysed life and hit business activities in the Northern Areas.
The Karakoram Highway was blocked at three points in Kohistan, stranding hundreds of passengers.
An avalanche blocked the KKH between Hunza and Gilgit near the Harespo College on Tuesday morning. The Gilgit-Skardu road has been blocked for two days.
According to reports from Astore, heavy snow pounded hilly areas of the district, including Guddai, Chillim, Minimurg, Qamree, Ratu, Rehmanpur, Darlay and Mirmalick. The areas are faced with fuel and food shortage.
The Gilgit-Astore road has been also blocked. Upper areas of the Ghizer district, including Yasin, Gupis, Ishkomen, Shamaran, Hamaran, Khalti, Dahimal, Phander, Teru, Gulakhmoli and Barsat, have been cut from the district headquarters.
CHITRAL: Life came to a halt and bazaars and offices wore a deserted look as heavy snowfall here on Tuesday forced people to stay indoors.
The Chitral city received two feet of snow and upper parts of the district received more than five feet of snow.
Electricity and telephone poles were uprooted in many areas. Power supply to Chitral was stopped from the local grid station after uprooting of poles. The city had earlier been disconnected from the national grid. The local administration is yet to begun clearing snow in the city. PIA flights to Chitral have been cancelled for six days.
MUZAFFARABAD: A mudslide triggered by heavy rain killed 10 members of a family in Bagh district’s Dharray Jabray village on Tuesday, police said.
Eight of the victims were identified as Gul Hussain, Faqar Deen, Ms Nazir Jan, Gulfraz, Sultan, Mehnaz, Sharif Jan and Shoaib. Two members of the family were injured.
In the Poonch district, Mohammad Shehbaz was swept away by a torrent.
