SAHIWAL, March 12: Lawyers suspended proceedings of courts on Monday across Punjab on the call of the Pakistan Bar Council and Punjab Bar Council. In Sahiwal, members of the district bar association observed a strike and boycotted courts.
A protest rally was also taken out which was addressed by DBA president Sheikh Muhammad Usman, former Punjab bar member Iftikhar Khawaja and Malik Ghulam Hussain.
OKARA: DBA president Malik Maqbool Shakir, PPP leader Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Gangoka and lawyers gathered outside the court of civil judge Chaudhry Shafique and burnt an effigy of Gen Pervez Musharraf when he started dismissing cases due to the non-appearance of lawyers.
No lawyers attended the courts while a black flag was hoisted atop the barroom. Lawyers would also boycott courts on Tuesday (today).
SHEIKHUPURA: Bar associations in Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Ferozewala and Sangla Hill observed a complete strike and also brought out protest rallies.
SIALKOT: Lawyers in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial, Pasrur, Shakargarh and Narowal also did not appear before any court.
The protesting lawyers wore black armbands and held separate agitational meetings. The Sialkot district bar association also held a meeting under the chair of its president Muhammad Iqbal Harrar. The meeting passed a resolution demanding an open trial of the chief justice.
Lawyers in Sialkot and Narowal districts would observe a black day on Tuesday (today).
DERA GHAZI KHAN: District bar association members vented their anger by setting on fire an effigy of President Musharraf.
Lawyers held a protest meeting in the district bar hall which was addressed by bar president Naseem Khosa and the secretary-general.
MIANWALI: Lawyers observed a complete strike in Mianwali district, including Piplan and Isakhel tehsil bars.
Proceedings of all cases in courts were adjourned due to the boycott by lawyers.
Led by Mianwali DBA president Muhammad Rafique Malik and Punjab Bar Council member Muhammad Akram Awan, lawyers also took out a procession amid heavy rain and paraded from district courts to Jehaz Chowk.
Former DBA presidents Sardar Nasrullah Khan, Malik Bashir Ahmed, Liaquat Ali Malik and Abul Khair Shah also addressed the rally.
MULTAN: Lawyers suspended court proceedings and representatives of both bar associations announced more protests, hunger strikes, boycott of courts and observing a black day on Tuesday.
The Multan High Court Bar Association organized a protest rally which started from the high court and terminated at Kutchery Chowk.
Addressing the rally, HCBA president Muhammad Mehmood Ashraf Khan said the protest of lawyers would continue till the restoration of the chief justice. DBA president Muhammad Akram Bhatti also spoke.
VEHARI: District bar association members stayed away from court proceedings and held a protest meeting at the district barroom.
Bar president Rana Sajid and other office-bearers addressed the meeting and also condemned the baton-charge on lawyers. They said that a black day would be observed on Tuesday.
Bar members also took out a protest procession after the meeting and raised slogans against President Pervez Musharraf. The police were deployed in force around the district courts to avoid any untoward incident.
SADIQABAD: The lawyers’ community did not appear before court and hoisted black flag on the rooftop of the barroom. Boycott of courts would continue on Tuesday (today) as well.
BAHAWALPUR: All members of high court and district bar associations suspended court proceedings.
At the general body meeting of the high court bar association here, a number of speakers, mostly belonging to an opposition political party, criticized the action of President Musharraf.
Lawyers also resolved to continue their boycott of courts till the reinstatement of the CJP. Bar members announced that they would observe a black day on Tuesday.
