KARACHI, Feb 22: A police constable was shot dead in an encounter with criminals in New Town on Friday morning.
Police said two policemen, Mohammed Younus and Shahzado Khan, were patrolling on a motorcycle when they spotted two men roaming around in a suspicious manner on a motorcycle (KIM-6310) in New Town.
The policemen signalled them to stop, but they opened fire and tried to flee away on the motorcycle.
Younus was hit by a bullet. He was rushed to Liaquat National Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
His body was sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for post-mortem.
A mobile of PIB police station, which was patrolling the area, spotted the suspects and chased them. They abandoned their motorcycle near the Jail Chowrangi and boarded a minibus of route W-19. The police mobile intercepted the minibus and arrested one of the suspects, Mohammed Bashir, on the bus, police said.
Police said the motorcycle used by the suspects was hijacked in Gulberg police limits on Thursday evening.
SHOT DEAD: A police constable shot a sub-inspector of police to death in Gulzar-i-Hijri in the early hours of Friday.
Police said Sub-Inspector Ashiq Husain, aged 45, was shot dead by constable Wasim Shah of Gulzar-i-Hijri police station at Bakra Mandi on Super Highway. The SI was posted at police training college, Saeedabad.
Police claimed to have arrested Wasim Shah, who was called on emergency duty at Gulzar-i-Hijri police station to manage the Eid rush on Super Highway.
The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem.
Police described the killing as a result of personal enmity.
CARJACKING: Seventeen vehicles — eight cars and nine motorcycle — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Friday, the police said.
Three cars were hijacked. Five others were stolen.
Five motorcycles were hijacked. Four others were stolen.
ACCIDENT: One passenger died and five others were injured when a passenger coach overturned on Super Highway due to slippery road.
Police said a coach (PE-1795) coming from Sadiqabad skidded and overturned near Kathor on Super Highway.
A passenger, Ghulam Habib, aged 45, died on the spot. Five passengers were injured.
The injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
EDHI CENTRE ROBBERS: Three bandits who barged into two Edhi Centres in the city and got away with cash on Thursday have been identified, a spokesman for the Edhi Foundation said on Friday, adds APP.
The bandits robbed the Edhi Centres at Star Gate and Clifton.
