ISLAMABAD, Feb 27: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has proposed a plan to improve border security among three neighbouring countries — Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran — to control the drug trade.

A senior government official, on condition of anonymity, told Dawn here on Tuesday that the UNODC plan was to be discussed at a proposed meeting of the drug control officials of the three countries in the Vienna meeting on Thursday.

UNODC chief Antonio Maria Costa gave the invitation to Pakistan during a visit, when he met Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and briefed him about the new initiative, the official said.

The UNODC initiative includes better communication facilities and intelligence sharing along the border areas of the countries, the official said.
