KARACHI, Feb 21: Reckless driving claimed six lives in the city on Thursday.

Three men died and seven others were injured in a road accident on Hub river road in the morning.

The police said that a private Suzuki pick-up van (KE-6297) collided head on with a passenger coach (PE-3202) near the Baba Shah Wilayat Mazar on the main Hub river road.

Sahibdad, aged 30, who was driving the Suzuki pickup, died on the spot. Mohammed Naeem, aged 25, and Sumar Rind, aged 28, who were also travelling on the pick-up van, died on way to hospital.

The injured were travelling in the coach. They were identified as Khyber Khan, aged 18, Rahman, aged 45, Sikandar, aged six, Meezan, Rahmania, aged 24, Rubina, aged 17, and Shazia.

The pick-up was on its way to Hub, and the passenger coach was heading for Lea Market.

Edhi sources said that the injured were first rushed to Murshid Hospital situated on Hub river road, but they were later shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi.

The police said that the driver of the passenger coach fled the scene.

A man died in a road accident in Saeedabad in the morning.

The police said that Sulaiman, aged 45, was trying to board a passenger coach near Pareeshan Chowk in Saeedabad when he lost his balance and was hit by another vehicle. He died on the spot. His body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

A young man was run over by a minibus in Defence Housing Authority.

The police said that Mir Hasan, aged 30, was hit by a recklessly-driven minibus on Khayaban-i-Shamsheer in DHA. He was rushed to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

An 11-year-old boy was crushed to death beneath the wheels of a minibus in Samanabad.

The police said that Naeem was run over by a minibus of route N at Samanabad Bazaar in Federal B-Area. Resident of Juma Goth, Super Highway, the boy was a rag-picker and looked like an Afghani by his appearance, the police said.

The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem, the police said.

The minibus driver fled the scene after the accident.

CARJACKING: Sixteen vehicles — seven cars and nine motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Thursday, the police said.

One car was hijacked. Six others were stolen. Five motorcycles were hijacked. Four others were stolen.

The police also claimed on Thursday to have recovered 13 vehicles in the city (Cars: U-9862, V-1404, PL-9758, AAY-698, JM-1042, PH-0267. Motorcycles: KCX-5554, KCV-4346, KAR-3228, HDM-8984, KCM-8812, KCQ-345 and HDG-1949).

FIRE: A towel factory was gutted by fire in Korangi Industrial Area in the early hours of Thursday.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said that a fire broke out around 4am in a towel factory in Korangi Industrial Area.

Soon the fire spread in the whole factory and destroyed the entire raw material and finished towels. Eleven fire tenders were pressed into service to put out the fire.

The fire was probably caused by a short circuit.
