LAHORE, Feb 26: Exhibiting her staying ability, the bay mare Wendy Trace, piloted by jockey M. Zeeshan stormed home to win the NICL Cup run over 1600 metres during the 26th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Monday.
The meeting scheduled to be held on Sunday, was postponed by a day due to the kite flying festival of Basant falling on Sunday.
Wendy Trace beat favourite colt, Byron by a distance. This colt from English sire, Baker's Gate out-of-Seiko, Byron was very confidently backed but he failed to produce a performance that was expected of him.
Ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, Byron ran in the front bunch until 1000 metres but then started dropping back and was finally beaten by Wendy Trace.
Neglected Black House and Puma The Great completed the frame among nine runners. The winner, trained by Rashid Latif, clocked one minute 42 2/5 seconds.
A race earlier chestnut colt Azam Love cruised to an easy victory to lift the Ghazali Cup run over 1300 metres. He beat odd-on favourite Run And Win by five lengths.
Rough Tough and Mubashara completed the board among ten starters.
Jockeys M. Zeeshan and Aamir Pervez stole the limelight when they brought home a brace of winners each.
Zeeshan piloted Laila in the first race and Wendy Trace in the fifth event. He was very lucky to win on the chestnut filly, who beat favourite Mama Mia by a length's margin.
Had there been some other rider on Mama Mia instead of Khalil Vicky there might have been some other story to tell.
It is interesting that both first and second placed, Laila and Mama Mia, are trained by one trainer, Sohail Aziz.
Aamir Pervez rode Intikhab-e-Alam and Azam Love in the second and fourth event of the day.
Three favourites won in a card of six races. The other three races were bagged by those available at longer odds.
