KARACHI, Feb 24: The Advisor to Chief Minister on Home, Wasim Akhtar, said on Saturday that no terrorist act had occured in the province during the past three months due to foolproof security arrangements. He said the measures which would remain intact for the Chehlum of Shuhada-e-Karbala.

Addressing a press conference here at his office, he said that the police acting on a tip-off from sensitive agencies arrested three suspected suicide bombers in Gulistan-i-Jauhar and seized from them three hand-grenade, two pistols and an explosive-stuffed jacket from them.

He said the police also arrested two suspected suicide bombers in Hyderabad and recovered two hand-grenades, two pistols and nine bottles of explosive chemicals from them. “Similarly, two dangerous terrorists were arrested and a pistol, suicide bomber jacket and explosive material seized from them”, he said, adding two more suspected terrorists were also held on a lead given by them.

The home advisor said effective measures had also been taken to curb the increasing street crime, especially in the provincial capital, and a mobile phone crime unit set up with a toll free phone number, 0800-91515, to assist the victims of cellular phone snatching and theft.

He said during the period under review, 755 cases of cell phone snatching and theft were registered in Karachi. Of them 188 cases have been solved, he added.

He said 541 suspects were arrested and 11 killed in several shootouts with police.

He said 85 motorcycles were donated to the police to control incidents of vehicle snatching and theft.

He said that during the past three months in all 537 motorcycles and 565 cars were either snatched at gunpoint or stolen in parts of the city. He said the police recovered as many as 158 bikes and 194 cars.

He said that seven policemen lost their lives and 25 others were injured in 131 shootouts with criminals in the period under review. “Police also killed 15 suspected dacoits and arrested 530 suspects, 134 of them red-handed.

The home advisor said the police smashed 113 gangs of robbers in last three months and seized 5,268 weapons from members of criminal gangs.

He said eight people were kidnapped for ransom and the police recovered seven of them and arrested nine persons on kidnapping charges.

He said the police also launched a campaign against drug and gambling dens and registered as many as 519 cases against the drug traffickers and gamblers. “Eight kilograms heroin and 750 kg hashish were also seized during the raids,” he added.
