LANDI KOTAL (Khyber Agency), Feb 22: The All Transporters’ Union has established an illegal checkpoint on the Peshawar-Torkham highway in Zakhakhel area where Rs200 are charged from every heavy vehicle coming from or going to Afghanistan.

Safeer Khan, a representative of the drivers transporting goods to Afghanistan, said the local political administration had not taken any action against the illegal checkpoint.

He said the collection made at the checkpoint was illegal and an additional burden on the drivers, who were also fleeced by another so-called transporters’ organisation, the Khyber Committee, on the border.

He appealed to the Khyber Agency political agent to remove then illegal checkpoints.

FOUR HELD: Authorities in Landi Kotal arrested four Zakhakhel tribesmen for their alleged involvement in damaging a tower of a cellular company. The company had recently extended its service to the area and erected towers at various points.

A few days back, some residents of Karamna and Alacha areas had damaged some equipment installed on the Ziarhai tower, disrupting the service to hundreds of subscribers.

Local people alleged that the firm had promised to extend its service to their area while erecting the tower but it had failed to fulfil its promise.
