GILGIT, Feb 20: A special team of NAB has arrested a DIG Raja Muzaffar Hussain, vehicle registration clerk Ali Raza and an SI Daulat Ali of police headquarters’ vehicle fitness department, from their residences.
The team flew to Gilgit from Islamabad at around 5.30 pm on Tuesday, sources said on Wednesday.
They were arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal registrations of over 300 vehicles, and possessing properties beyond the known sources, they said.
Vehicles were reportedly smuggled into the Northern Areas from various parts of the country, and registered in Gilgit in connivance with the police officials, the sources said.
The sources said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed two references against the DIG Muzaffar as well as other five other senior superintendents (SSPs) of the NA police.
Some retired SSPs had also been put under watch for their alleged involvement in the corrupt practices.
The sources said DIG Muzaffar had been kept at the Police Rest House in Gilgit while Ali Raza and Daulat Ali had been confined in the Cannt Police Station and were sent on a five-day judicial remand on Wednesday after producing before the regional NAB judge.
They would be shifted to Islamabad later.
