HYDERABAD, Jan 31: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Secretary General Syed Munawar Hassan on Tuesday warned that his party would not participate in the multi-party conference proposed to be held in London if its host or agenda were changed or it was organised by Pakistan People’s Party.

Talking to journalists after addressing a workers’ training programme at a marriage hall in Latifabad Mr Hassan said that the PPP had proved time and again that it supported Gen Pervez Musharraf and the two held similar views on many issues.

He accused the PPP of trying to strike a deal with the general after signing charter of democracy.

The government had compromised the country’s solidarity and integrity by allowing Nato (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) forces to use its land and air routes, he said.

He said that even the use of Pakistan’s land and air would be of little benefit to the US and its allies because Taliban had the capability to counter them.

He advised the government to change its policy of unconditional cooperation with America in its war against terror in the interest of the country and its people.

He blamed the government for taking a U-turn on Kashmir policy and said that internal situation in Pakistan had started to deteriorate since Islamabad became Bush administration’s frontline ally in its so-called war against terror.

The recent series of suicide bombings in the country proved the government’s policy had failed, he said and added that the government had fallen so low in its submission that it was owning responsibility for the attacks launched by others as it happened in Bajaur.

Mr Hassan said that a representative meeting of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and its supreme council would be held before the forthcoming session of National Assembly.

He dispelled reports of differences among the religious alliance and said that each ally had the right to give its opinions at the supreme council meeting but its decision on resignations from National Assembly would be unanimous and would be followed by all the component parties of the alliance.

He criticised the recent visit by a delegation of All-Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and said that Mirwaiz and Abdul Ghani Bhatt had brought with them an Indian agenda because they did not enjoy the support of freedom fighters or people of Kashmir who observed a complete strike in Indian held Kashmir to express confidence in Syed Ali Gilani's leadership when the delegation visited Pakistan.

Mr Hassan said that protests would be held between February 1 and 5 to condemn the government's shift on Kashmir policy and said that the US did not like the government’s pact with militants in South Waziristan because it was in the interest of Pakistan and people.

It was the reason the American government was pressurising Pakistan to do away with the pact, he said.

Monitoring bodies: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil on Wednesday directed district monitoring committees to increase their activities so that working of local government departments could be improved. He was presiding over a meeting of heads of the monitoring committees at his office.

The nazim said the district monitoring committees had been empowered so that working of district government’s departments could be improved.
