KHAIRPUR, Feb 19: Several growers of Mirwah and Faiz Ganj talukas were baton-charged by the police on Tuesday when they were protesting against shortage of water at Jalalani regulator.

Carrying dried wheat plants, the growers of the two talukas staged a demonstration and blocked Jalalani-Bozdar Wada link road.

The protesters closed the doors of the regulators and raised slogans against the irrigation officials.

According to the growers, the irrigation officials were providing more water than the share to influential landlords while the growers were even deprived of their due share of water.

Meanwhile, the Awam Dost Panel Nazims of Faiz Ganj taluka and councillors held a protest meeting against the shortage of water.

The taluka Nazim and councillors alleged that the shortage was due to the negligence and inefficiency of the irrigation department officials who were providing water only to big landlords and influential persons of the area.

They deplored that due to the continuous shortage of water, several families of the growers had been compelled to migrate to other areas.
