Published January 24, 2007

KARACHI, Jan 23: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has said the city government has earmarked a fund of Rs100 million to streamline the working of the fire brigade department on modern lines.

He said besides purchasing 10 new fire engines, the old ones would be repaired, while new vehicles would be procured and appointment of staff would be made for new fire stations. Fire officers would be sent abroad for training and insurance policy would be introduced for employees of fire brigade department. Besides, a study would be carried out through a consultant firm to bring the department at par with those of developed cities.

Chairing a meeting of fire station officers at his office, he said significant changes will be brought about in the department and consultants would be appointed in the next few months.

They would carry out study and submit report about fire brigade’s administrative, financial and technical functioning and its operational procedures.

In the light of their recommendations, the working of this department would be streamlined, he added.

He pointed out that fire brigade was assigned with protecting the life and property of people and it would be unfortunate if fire fighters lose their lives merely due to lack of resources.—APP
