LAHORE, Jan 16: A six event card, looking competitive, will be contested during the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday. Five races will be run over the sprinting distance of 1000m and one over 800m. In all, 55 horses will take part in all the events barring last-minute withdrawals.

The feature event, the Kharian Plate class five division one and two combined handicap race over 1000m has eight runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Of them three come into reckoning. They are: Desert Queen, Aaja Bulbul and Billoo The Great.

Four-year-old filly Desert Queen, who ran third in the Sadiqabad Plate class five division one and two on Wednesday last failed to put up a performance that was expected of her. Perhaps the reason may be she appeared on the course after six weeks and needed a run to be fit. Desert Queen is the progeny of Power Base-out-of Desert Breeze and is trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar, who is leading trainers statistics table. On classification she is a cut above in class vis-à-vis her rivals and should win provided she is sent with a will to do so. Billoo The Great and Aaja Bulbul should be her challengers. This will be the fifth race of the day.

Five-year-old mare, Simoom, Gujrat Princess and Beautiful Baby attract attention in the supporting and fourth race. On bloodline Simoom and Gujrat Princess should fight for the top honours. This should be a closely contested race.

The card also features an interesting race in which seven ponies of the Lahore Race Club (LRC) Riding School being used for training youngsters in riding skill will be taking part.

However, Stumpy, Goldie and Gypsy should fight to win this sixth and last race of the day.

Armida, Malang Aya and Royal Palace are the chance contestants in the third race with the filly Armida having speed advantage over her rivals, who are unreliable at start. The first and second races are such events in which most of the runners are in with a chance. Love Minister in the first race and Rasputine in the second look good.

The first race will be held at 12 noon.
