PPP to hold polls for party offices

LAHORE, Jan 12: The Pakistan People’s Party (Sic) led by Ms Benazir Bhutto will hold elections for various party offices in all four provinces between Jan 20 and Oct 20, party’s Chief Election Commissioner Sajjad Bokhari said here on Friday.

At a news conference, he said a president, a senior vice-president, a secretary-general, a joint secretary and secretary public relations will be elected for every province by the councillors.

Just back after his meeting with Ms Bhutto in Dubai, Mr Bokhari said in Punjab elections would be held on 297 provincial constituencies. Office-bearers will also be chosen for 3,000 union councils.

In Punjab, voters’ list would be issued on Jan 20 and objections entertained till Feb 10. Final voters’ list would be issued on Feb 20.

Nomination papers will be received between Feb 22 and 28 and objections can be raised between March 1 and 5. Between March 9 and 12, those desirous of getting out of the race will be permitted to take back their nomination papers. The final list of candidates will be published on March 17. The candidates will be given 13 days for campaign at the end of which elections will be held on March 30.

In Sindh, voters’ list will be issued on April 6 and objections accepted till April 25. The final list of voters will be issued on April 30. Candidates will be able to submit their nomination papers from May 2 to 10. Objections against them can be filed between May 10 and 15. From May 16 to 20, candidates will be eligible to withdraw their nomination papers.

The final list of candidates will be made public on May 25 and the elections will be held on June 10.

In the NWFP, voters’ list will be released on June 15 against which objections, if any, may be filed during the next two weeks.

On July 5, the final list of voters will be issued. Nomination papers for various offices will be received between July 7 and 12. Objection, if any, can be submitted between July 14 and 20. Nomination papers can be withdrawn between July 22 and 25. Election will be held on Aug 12.

Voters’ list for Balochistan will be issued on Aug 15. Objections can be filed for 16 days after which a final list be released on Sept 5.
