KARACHI, Jan 11: A man was arrested early Thursday morning on the charges of killed his friend’s mother, subjecting her newly-wed daughter-in-law to rape and injuring the latter on resistance before fleeing their house in Block 7, Gulshan-i-Iqbal late on Wednesday night.

The accused, later identified as Asad Abbas, went to the house of his friend, Salman, after making it sure that he was not at home, TPO Gulshan, SP Saqib Ismail said, adding that he fetched a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Salman’s elderly mother to death. Asad Abbas then made advances to Salman’s wife, who posed stiff resistance. He attacked and injured the woman to overpower her and subjected her to rape.

“Before fleeing the house, he warned her against disclosing his name to anybody, advising her to tell others a story of house robbery,” the SP said, who believed that Salman’s mother was killed to eliminate a witness.

The woman, however, revealed the story to the Gulshan police soon after the incident and nominated Asad as accused. Police raided his and arresting him. During interrogation, the accused initially denied the charges but, later, confessed to his crime, police said.

Asad Abbas owns a medical store located in Block 1, Gulistan-i-Jauhar whereas Salman is an employee of a gift shop owner. Both are in their early 20s and close to each other for seven years, according to police.

DEADLY BLAZE: A couple died when fire engulfed their house in Bahadurabad on Thursday morning. Another couple living on the ground floor of the same house was rescued but taken to hospital.

Police said the information of the fire was received at ‘Madadgar 15’ at 8:35am.

A spokesman for the Fire Department said that when they rescued the couple, Asif Illyas and Nadia Asif, the woman was still alive but she died on way to the hospital. She was pregnant. The spokesman said Asif was already dead when he was taken out of the burning house.

The other couple, Kashif (Asif’s younger brother) and Sana, was living on the first floor of the house. Both of them had fallen unconscious due to suffocation and rushed to a private hospital where their condition stable when the last reports came in.

Police and Fire Department believed that an electrical short circuit might have caused the fire.

Meanwhile, a seven-year-old boy, Burhan, died after falling into Lyari River’s Rexerlane section, in Pak Colony area on Thursday evening. Efforts were under way to fish out his body till filing of this report.
