BAHAWALPUR, Feb 18: Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Chairman Afrasiab Khattak and Secretary-General Hina Jilani lamented the poor were still the target of police excesses.

Talking to a cross-section here on Monday, they claimed more powers had been given to the police in the name of reforms and people would face no relief from the thana culture. They said the commission was reviewing these reforms so as to ensure accountability of the police.

Condemning the role of politicians, they said their efforts had brought the country away from democracy in its true shape and urged the politicians to work for its restoration.

The HRCP had stood the test of time in promoting awareness among people regarding their rights and was working for solution to their problems.

Those who should be getting education in schools were at the mercy of landlords and the haves, they concluded.

BAN: The Punjab governor imposed ban on smoking in the cinema halls, it is learnt on Monday.

The EDO (health) would have the authority to take action against the violators under the law.
