KARACHI, Dec 9: At a programme arranged for general physicians, trainee doctors and specialists, different aspects of urinary tract infection were discussed at Liaquat National Hospital on Saturday.

Prof Iffat Yazdani, director of Liaquat National Institute of Kidney Diseases, said bacteria in urine was not a disease. He said normal bacterial flora was beneficial and played key role in defence mechanism against infections.

Dr Fahimul Haq said women with either symptomatic or asymptomatic infection treated in early pregnancy should be followed with monthly urine culture.

Dr Aziz Abdullah, head of urology department, said elderly people were more prone to urinary tract infections because of acquired anatomical abnormalities, decrease bladder defence mechanism and frequent instrumentation and hospitalisation.

Dr Ishrat Saleem said children were vulnerable to get urinary tract infection because of various congenital anatomic abnormalities.
