PESHAWAR, Oct 28: The NWFP government has asked the officials of law enforcement agencies to devise an effective mechanism to improve law and order situation and ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city.

The directives were issued at a meeting presided over by the NWFP Minister for Religious Affairs Amanullah Haqqani here on Saturday.

The meeting reviewed law and order situation in Peshawar district and the adjacent FR areas and emphasised the need for close coordination between police and other agencies concerned to curb crime and remove public grievances.

The meeting decided to increase police patrolling and strict vigilance on movement of suspicious vehicles plying in local bazaars and highways to control subversive activities.

It was further decided to launch a vigorous campaign for bringing criminals under the law to purge the society of crimes. The meeting expressed satisfaction over the performance of police department.

Police asked to properly register cases against the accused and to devise effective strategy for tackling the incidents of bomb blasts.

In this connection, the police were directed to immediately start installing close circuit cameras at all the thickly populated places in Peshawar.

The meeting appreciated the initiative to register cart- pushers and decided that no vehicle other than yellow cabs would be allowed in taxi stands. It was also decided that taxies should display the board inscribed with “rent a car” and should be registered properly.

In order to resolve traffic jam problem, it was decided that all illegal bus stands be eliminated and no truck or other heavy vehicles be allowed to enter the city from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

The meeting constituted a committee under the leadership of SP Traffic to stop the use of VCRs in buses and was asked to keep close liaison with the provincial minister for religious affairs with the aim to stop obscenity.
