GUJRANWALA, Feb 14: The power of hearing habeas corpus cases has been devolved to the district and sessions judges to facilitate the aggrieved at the district level.
This was stated by provincial minister for law Dr Khalid Ranjha at the local District Bar Association (DBA) here on Thursday.
He said the Agriculture Development Bank (ADB) would offer an amount of $350 million for the judiciary while $100 million would be spent on small courts and Bar councils to provide better facilities.
He said the government would allot site for construction of housing colony for lawyers within six months.
He maintained the government’s aim was to eliminate terrorism through establishing anti-terrorism courts, adding the reservations of lawyers would be honoured in this regard. They had the time to forward their proposals regarding the establishment of courts, he said.
He urged the lawyers to encourage the entrants in the courts.

Meanwhile, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) Chief Executive Brig Mushtaq Ahmad Chaudhry had directed his staff to ensure power supply without disruption.
ASI JAILED: An additional district and sessions judge on Thursday sent a police assistant sub-inspector behind bars for deceiving the court in a narcotics case hearing.
Reports said the Aroop police arrested Muhammad Riaz and submitted his challan to the court. The counsel, during the hearing, pleaded that the police had involved the accused in the narcotics case.
ASI Shafqatullah produced a packet before the court, claiming it to be filled with charas recovered from the accused during a raid.
Judge Sanaullah Khan Niazi found pieces of soap wrapped in the packet. He ordered the arrest of the ASI. The court adjourned the case till Feb 26.
Meanwhile, an additional district and sessions judge acquitted one Ijaz Ahmad in a hudood ordinance when the prosecution failed to provide any evidence against him during the hearing of the case here the same day.
