ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has called for broad consensus on fundamental national issues and observed that internal dissensions lead to external vulnerabilities besides hindering economic progress and public welfare.

Speaking on the “Vision for Pakistan” at the PAF Commanders Conference here at the Air Headquarters on Tuesday, he said difference of opinion and political debate were essential elements of democracy.

He, however, stressed that it was imperative to rise above personal or group interests. “We must evolve a broad consensus on fundamental national issues and act in unison for the greater good of the people and the country.”

He said the nation must stand united by developing understanding, flexibility and maturity in all its endeavours.

He said Pakistan was keen to promote peace and cooperation with its neighbours by resolving outstanding issues.

“We do not harbour aggressive designs against any country, nor do we wish to engage in an arms race. However, we firmly believe that a strong defence is indispensable for the territorial integrity, stability and progress of Pakistan.”

The prime minister said the nation was proud of its armed forces which have always stood by the nation in the hour of trial and exhibited exemplary courage and capability to defend the geographical boundaries of the country.

He expressed his government’s resolve to strengthen and re-organize the defence forces along modern lines and to enhance the country’s indigenous defence capability. “Peace is achieved through strength and not weakness,” he remarked.

He said the government will provide the Pakistan Air Force with all necessary resources to help it acquire modern weapon systems and aircraft.

Mr Aziz while referring to the key role the Pakistan Air Force was playing in protecting the country’s frontiers said it could serve as a stabilising force in the region.

He said Pakistan’s defence doctrine was based on minimum credible deterrence and favoured a regional strategic restraint regime in strategic and conventional weapons.
