Iraqi leaders to meet in Makkah

RIYADH, Oct 11: Iraqi religious scholars are meeting in Makkah in the last week of Ramazan in an effort to find ways to stem the sectarian violence in their country.

This meeting of Sunni and Shia religious scholars is scheduled to be held in Makkaht-ul-Mukarrama for Oct 19 and 20, under the auspices of the Oragnisation of Islamic conference (OIC).

According to an OIC statement, some religious scholars have already put together a proposed reconciliation document to be discussed at the meeting.

"This (proposed) document, once approved, will send a message to all the Iraqi people making clear Islam's position on blood-letting among Muslims," said the statement.

Some leading Shia authorities, however, have decided to boycott the Makkah meeting.
