LAHORE, Oct 5: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal president Qazi Husain Ahmad has said a grand alliance is necessary for the regulation of consultation among opposition parties.

He was talking to journalists at an Iftar hosted by him at the Jamaat-i-Islami secretariat in Mansoora here on Thursday.

He said the situation prevailing in the country necessitated struggle for end to military rule from the platform of a grand alliance.

Referring to the statement of PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim describing the formation of a grand alliance unnecessary, he said the alliance was the need of the hour but the Makhdoom was not proving effective in this regard despite being a respected politician because the decision making power in PPP rested with its chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

The Qazi said the US could not maintain peace in the world through its new world order because it was devoid of justice and aimed at enslaving the people. Peace could be established in the world only by following the principles of Islam which favoured equality of human beings. The presence of Christians in the iftar was a proof of the Islamic spirit of love for fellow human beings.

He said Gen Pervez Musharraf had tried to create an impression of being a favourite of the US through his book but the world was condemning us on knowing about the details of handing over of the suspected Al-Qaeda men to Americans for money.

He said the Muslims should face the challenges to Islam by acting upon its principles and not by becoming defensive.
