PESHAWAR, Oct 5: People living in about 300 buildings declared dangerous by the Town-I Building Control Authority are reluctant to vacate them, officials said.
They said the authority had designated the buildings as unsafe and issued notices to their owners and occupants to vacate them.
Assistant Town Officer Rasheedullah said the engineering branch of the town municipal administration had conducted a survey of buildings after last year’s earthquake and detected over 300 defective buildings in Asia, Gunj, Ander Shaher, Karim Pura and Jehangirpura union councils.
He said most of the buildings were three-storey.
Some of the buildings required major repair while others were completely unfit for accommodation, according to Building Control Authority’s report.
Gunj area was declared dangerous about two decades ago because of cracks appearing in various houses.
Officials said that despite the notices occupants of the vulnerable buildings were reluctant to shift to safe areas.
They said the authority had no legal powers to evacuate people from dangerous buildings.
DROP-IN CENTRE: A drop-in centre for street children was opened by the Society for Protection of Rights of Children (Sparc) here in Sikander Town on Thursday.
The objectives of the project are to raise awareness among street children about their rights and protection, empower them to be able to protect themselves and their colleagues against abuse and exploitation, provide them access to psychosocial support, education, recreation and health facilities and create an atmosphere fore their reunion with parents.
