How Toba DPO became an OSD

TOBA TEK SINGH, Oct 2: An MNA from Toba Tek Singh has got the DPO transferred to settle an old score.

Sources said DPO Akhtar Laleka came to Jamia Faridia Mosque to offer his Juma prayers. He spotted a vehicle outside the mosque bearing TTS-786 on the number plate. He directed the city SHO to check the documents of the vehicle.

The SHO took the vehicle to the police station where the driver produced the documents showing the number was purchased from Karachi under the government’s favourite number scheme. He allowed the driver to take the vehicle that belonged to former district nazim Chaudhry Ashfaq.

The incident provoked Chaudhry Ashfaq and his family. His nephew MNA Mian Farhan Latif faxed his resignation from the National Assembly to the prime minister in protest. Upon that, the prime minister directed the chief minister to immediately transfer the DPO. The chief minister ordered the transfer of the DPO and he was made an OSD.

When contacted, the DPO said that transfer of a government official was a routine matter, adding it was a fact that he had directed checking of the documents of the vehicle.

The sources claimed that former nazim Chaudhry Ashfaque had settled an account with the DPO as he had played a major role in the win of district nazim Chaudhry Abdul Sattar, who is a political opponent of Chaudry Ashfaque, in election for district nazim’s slot.
