Sailing squad for Asiad

KARACHI, Sept 27: Pakistan Sailing Federation (PSAF) on Wednesday named 13 sailors for the upcoming 15th Doha Asian Games to be held from Dec 1 to 15.

The squad was finalised at the end of trials which concluded on Sunday.

Pakistan will feature in eight of the 12 events that are at stake during the quadrennial games. These include International 470, Windsurfing (light), Windsurfing (heavy), Optimist (boys, girls), Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Match Racing (keel boat) and Laser 4.7.

The names were forwarded to the POA who will send‘entry by name’ to the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) before Oct 1.

Meanwhile, PSAF plans to send Match Racing team to Bahrain for training in the beginning of November to be followed by a trip to Japan, secretary PSAF, Cdr (retd) Navaid Usmani told Dawn on Wednesday.

Pakistan returned with a bronze medal in the Match Racing from the Asian Sailing regatta held at Doha, venue for the Asian Games, in March this year. The quartet which consists of Shehryar Arshad, Ahsan Naqvi,Iqbal Azeem and Mohammad Riaz unfortunately lost the trials to Zahid Rauf, Mamoon Sadiq, Amir Nawaz and Abdul Hameed.

Match Racing (keel boat): Zahid Rauf, Mamoon Sadiq, Amir Nawaz, Abdul Hameed.

Laser 4.7: Sabahatullah Babur.
